what does a stud finder do? do i really need one when putting up wall shelving?
i'm going to put up some wall shelving. i want to know if i should use a stub finder? i don't have very much money to use, and i'm sure they're a bit expensive, do i need one? how useful are they?
also how accurate are levels? i want to make sure the thing is leveled really well.
A stud finder helps you find the wood studs behind your drywall, so that you can secure your wall shelves to something stable. If you just hang the shelves on the wall, not secured to the studs, and put something heavy on them, they could fall down. Stud finders aren't very expensive. Levels are very accurate, you should be able to find both of these at Lowe's or Home Depot in a range of prices.
we just hung wall art in our house & they both worked great
the walls that you see are made of drywall that is attached to the "STUDS" (two by fours).
If you attempt to attach shelving (or ANYTHING else) to the drywall, it will fall down--leaving a hole or holes in your wall.
You must attach your shelving to the studs.
Soooo, yes. you gotta have a stud finder.
Sorry!
Oh, and if you want to save money, you can use a small glass of water for a level. It works fine.
How to make a wall shelving unit from 1 x 4 recycled wood pallets.?
I need some suggestions on how to piece together and secure to drywall small sections of 1 x 4 recycled wood pallets to make a wall shelving unit approximately 7' x 7'. The number of shelves, spacing and symetry are not a major concern. Securing the pieces together to make the longer runs and what type of ties to use to secure to the wall is the biggest concern - aesthetics come later. Form follows function. I would appreciate any and all suggestions.
Karen, that is a very tough project using wood pallets. Think about maybe finding a second hand shelve unit at a garage sale or a second hand store. I wish you the best of luck on your project.
What color should my wall shelving?
I have a tan bedroom with white trim. Furniture is an antiqued wood. Should the shelves be white, black, or an antiqued wood (which would be difficult to match)? Picture frames are black.
That depends.
WHITE will make the shelves stand out (but not so much that it's 'loud'), but it will make the room seem airier, more fresh. It will match with the white trim, also.
BLACK will stand out, but it will probably be a focal point in the tan coloured room. It gives the room more volume. Black is a nice choice as it compliments the picture frames.
ANTIQUED WOOD will, in turn, blend in with the room, making everything cozier, smoother. It will definitely match with the furnitures in the room.
If I were to choose a colour, I would go with white. It's nice and subtle. A classic colour you'll never get tired of. Since your room is already very antique-y, adding more antiqued wood will be too much. Black is nice, but ..not nice enough.
:) I hope that helps! & Good Luck.
What kind of fastener would one use to mount a heavy shelving unit to a concrete basement wall?
What kind of fastener would one use to mount a heavy shelving unit to a concrete basement wall? And how does one go about mounting such a unit without doing damage to the wall? Is concrete like would in that it will not crack or chip so long as one makes a pilot hole almost as wide as the particular bolt? What precautions are neccessary?
You will need a number of items. First off, do you have a hammer drill, if not, not to worry, any electrical drill should work. This may not be a job for one of those battery powered units.
Go to Home Depot and get the right size anchors. Ask the guy at the store to direct you to the correct ones to use for your application. Note that there are some really good and simple to use anchors.
Check to make sure that you have the correct "concrete" drill bit. Do not attempt to drill the hole with a drill bit for wood or metal...it will not work. Drill the hole to the depth of the anchor and put the anchor into the wall. Most anchors require that you "set" them properly before putting the bolt in.
There are two ways to typically set an anchor. One type is where you place the anchor into the hole, put a centre punch tool down the hole of the anchor, and with a hammer bang the bottom. There is a small bullet like capsule on the bottom that expands the anchor in the hole. Now you are ready to insert your bolt or threaded rod.
The other type of anchor requires that you drill a hole as before, usually these anchors have the bolt as part of the anchor assembly, put the anchor in the hole and place a washer on the bolt, flush with the wall. Hand tighten the nut down as far as you can and with an open-ended wrench start turning the nut clockwise. You will feel it tightening up. Remove the nut and washer, place your bracket on the wall and voila.
If you do not want to use anchors, you can use wooden dowels. You will still be required to drill the concrete to the size just below the size of the wooden dowel that you purchased. Once the hole is drilled, hammer in the wooden dowel into the hole. This should be very snug and tight, even to the point where you cannot comfortably pull the wooden dowel out.. Cut the dowel flush to the wall and use large woodscrews. The larger and longer the better. Remember, if you use a 3 inch screw, the hole has to be a minimum of three inches deep and the dowel of course would be the same length.
This last method is not as strong as using properly set anchors. I would use, at a minimum, double the amount of wood dowels as I would use anchors.
If you make a mistake with the anchors and the hole turns out too big, get bigger anchors or in those instances, use the wood dowel.
How heavy of a shelf are you putting up anyway? Make sure you mention that to the Home Depot guy.
I hope this helps.
How much would the cheapest wall shelving kit be?

Something along them lines run differant prices. Name means everything. I have seen shelving like that sold cheaply (home depot and lowes) They have shelving and all the other items needed to build your own custom shelving to your own size and specs. It truely depends on your need and fit. Go to the section around the accoustical tiles, the shelving is there. You will need the shelving itself, the plastic lock down's (for the back of the shelf) and the metal arms (to hold the shelf up) When installing make sure you have them screwed into the studs, or else it will pull from the wall. The shelving comes a beautiful white color, and all parts and accesories are matching. I hope this helps.
