Should we purchase a mattress protection plan?
We will be purchasing a high end mattress and box spring set. The company offers a "10 year mattress protection plan + machine washable allergy protective cover" for $100. Is this worth it? Under what circumstances would anyone employ a mattress protection plan?
I have read that "extended warranties" are almost never a good deal for the consumer.... they only put extra money in the salesman's and the company's pocket...
Unless you have messy kids, or are really horrible to your mattress, I guess that's when you should get it.
I've had the same cheap mattress for about four years now. I turn it regularly to wear it evenly on both sides.

If it is a high end mattress it should come with a warranty. In addition, there is a lot of fine print to a mattress warranty.
The protective cover? You are going to have a mattress pad and bedding, right? Unless you are incontinent the mattress should be well protected.

Is getting an organic mattress pad good enough for protection from mattress off-gassing chemicals?
Organic mattresses start at $1,700. Is buying a regular mattress and an organic mattress pad/topper good enough protection from the chemical off-gassing? Or is the only way to go completely organic?
The only real chemicals that outgas would be the glue and any solvents they used to clean the parts.
My mother has Multiple Chemical Syndrome, which means she has a severe reaction to almost any chemical smells. Needless to say, it's hard for her to go shopping, but from her experience, we've all learned that most things outgas on their own within 1-2 years. I also know from that experience that a topper wouldn't prevent anything on it from outgassing... it might actually make it take longer (because it doesn't get sufficient air on the top part that's covered), and you would still smell the fresh bed smells from the bottom (which isn't sealed off).
If you want to outgas a new bed faster, put it in a room with a good air purifier and leave it in there for a while... it should be mostly outgassed in a few months or so if it's an otherwise empty room. We once made the mistake of having a spare freezer in the room we were outgassing some furniture and the freezer started outgassing.... it stunk in their for months!
Anyway, if you're worried about the chemical odors, go for a smaller company or one that makes them in-house so you can specify you don't want too much glue or chemicals in it (which isn't an option in most areas).... or just get a bed that's been in a non-smoking environment for a couple years. [edit]: Sorry, I should have clarified... the "air purifier" we used to help the outgassing was an ozone generator, and it does help to outgas faster. Our experience (both with and without it for identical items) and our research before buying it says so.
Has anyone heard of a space bag(vacuum-able) large enough for a full size futon mattress?
It is needed to store and protect a full size futon mattress. I need both the protection and size reduction a space bag or pak bag offers. I saw such a product made in China for ordering in bulk by other companies but could find no other connection.
To my knowledge, the largest space bag you can purchase in the US is only big enough for a comforter.
Can anyone recommend a good waterproof mattress protector?
I recently bought three "waterproof" mattress pads for my preschool kids beds from Target that apparently are NOT waterproof. They are very comfy, don't have that vinyl smell/noise, but sadly, not 100% waterproof as they claim. I am looking for a bed protector pad (like a sheet without fitted sides) to put under the mattress pads that I already have as an added level of protection, but I can't find anything online. I can't stand the vinyl waterproof mattress pads because they are uncomfortable. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I use these on my bed (to protect from the occasional period leakage) as well as my son's. They work really well, are breathable and are comfortable to sleep on. They are expensive, but so are mattresses, and I think they are worth the investment.

Do people understand they are sleeping on chemicals?
I delivered a load of HAZMAT chemicals to a plant that manufactures mattresses. This is a very expensive product, and the workers all wore face masks, and full body protection. I was not allowed into the plant, as it was toxic, and so, dangerous without PPE clothing. The barrels I delivered required 5 placards, and I'm just wondering...do Americans realize that they are laying on some serious chemical combinations, with the new type of sleep mattresses?
No matter how good it feels, I wouldn't take one if it were given to me. Years from now, when bizarre cancers are found to be caused by such agents, and the Corporation has gone out of business to avoid lawsuits, will I be guilty for not alerting authorities? The media? Is there a place a whistleblower can submit his fears of serious dangers that threaten society? This is a VERY popular product, advertised widely.
Sad thing is, that chemicals are in just about everything in this day and age.They are in our foods,clothing and even in the air and water.I just don`t see why they call it "Healthy Living" .
