Wanting to build awning-type overhang on door?
I want to build an awning-type overhang to provide shade. The side where the door is has no type of shade. I want to anchor the awning type overhand with metal posts. Where could I purchase these posts from? Do they have an official name?
You can get decorative support columns, or structural (sometimes called 'lolly columns'). The decorative columns come in a very wide range of choices. You can even get vinyl wrapped support columns, with a metal or wood core.
Any building supply store will a selection of these. (Lowe's, etc)
The columns will need to have some sort of support, or foundation. (footer, pier, etc) This can be as simple as digging a hole and pouring the concrete yourself for each post, to pouring a complete footer/foundation. If you already have a deck, you may be able to put the supports over the deck piers.
One tip.... since this is a new addition, make it big enough to be comfortable! I'd suggest you mark out a space, and see if you can open the door with your arms full...Ive seen one or two projects like this, that would have turned out so much better, if they'd just added another 12 inches, hehehe.
Have Fun
Oh yeah, look at the physics of the awning, put some thought into it. Depending on how far you want hang it and how much weight you have. These things effect your anchorage points and the angle of your bracing and supports. Think of things like rain and wind as well. Canvas lasts along time but still tears and rips in the wind.
DIY plans for wood door awning?
How far does your awning extend? How much weight will have to be supported while repairing/replacing? I have attached a site that gives you some choices.
how to install an awning to the house over a side door?
never done it. need the awning to have a strong support system.
It depends on the type of awning and the type of wall. Many have a bracket that attaches to the side of the wall. If the wall is not brick or stucco, you can drill through the siding and attach to the studs. If you are going into brick, use a lead lag shield with a lag screw. Going through stucco can be tricky, but again, you should try to locate and screw into studs.
Some awnings have a diagonal brace that comes from near the front of the awning back to the wall. This should be securely attached to studs if possible, as this will prevent the awning from being torn off from an updraft, as well as preventing collapse from snow (if applicable). Hope this helps.
