Completely Hygienic!
Who would have thought there was so much to learn about toilets and bathroom culture? This is a great primer for those who wonder just how people did bathe and perform 'ablutions' before the days of indoor plumbing and water-trapped toilets for all (or at least those of us in western countries). Written in 1960, it assumes a bit more familiarity than most of us have with English-style boilers and toilets, and more knowledge of history than the average high school graduate would have today. The language is a bit old-school, but in a descriptive fashion, and is never difficult to follow. It does contain several quotes in French and Latin without translations, but they are short, and not essential to the enjoyment of the book.

Clean & Decent is at its best when sharing tidbits and historical anecdotes (such as story of a householder how discovered that his royal houseguests had used his hallways, landings and cellars for their toilets). In the Penguin Classic History edition, an old fashioned font has been used, which, along with numerous black and white illustrations (not all of them very well produced or labelled, unfortunately), gives the book a great "old fashioned" feel.

It is sometimes uneven in its technical data. Some diagrams have quite full explanations, and others none at all. However, it never pretends to be a technical book, and provides a very extensive bibliography for anyone who's interested in the how-to's. Some diagrams and drawings also suffer in reproduction, and aren't very clear. The arrangement of the book isn't very intuitive, and it seems to jump back and forth in time, but then, so did humanity's knowledge of and desire for hygiene.

This is enjoyable light reading, especially for anyone interested in 'every day' history who wonders just how people went about at least one aspect of their daily business. It will also provide you with a never-ending supply of did-you-know's. While it's a shame that it wasn't revised and updated to include those other fascinating periods in bathrooms - the 50's and 60's - it's publication as a reprint of the original makes it a great piece of literary history on it's own.

Great for my two dogs' room!
Works well, but then again we have ceiling fans throughout our entire house, so I don't know if that makes a difference. Some other reviews were concerned about circulation. You can't beat this stuff. I also use it in my daycare, bedroom, kitchen, and my dogs' room on the second floor (pretty much everywhere). People tell me all the time that the air is different in my house. My daycare is on the first floor of my home, and it even smells great all through the first floor. I'm a very happy customer!

Love This Product!

Bamboo Carbon
Not effective in eliminating odor in my car after 1 month of use. Tried a fan to circulate air in the car, but no impact on odor elimination.

Waste of money.

Odor eater
Okay, I was skeptical of this product. I know activated carbon does absord odors MUCH better than baking soda but had my doubts about it keeping the cat area odor free.

The cat area has very little circulation of air (noted in another review) and has the liter box and food. It actually does a great job of picking up the odor. It has been there for 2 months and is working well.

The only reason for the 4 of 5 is I think this is still a bit pricey.

Bamboo Deodorizer
It works. I stuck it under my sink next to my trash can--where I dump all the food trash--and overnight the rotten egg smell was completely gone. Then I put it in my fridge and it worked there as well--when the fresh baking soda didn't work at all. The only thing I didn't realize is that there is no smell--it doesn't replace the stink with something clean or fresh, it just absorbs the bad odor. So the trash smells like plastic and trash, and the fridge like cold and old food, but none of the awful smells linger.

Fantastic scale!
This scale is great! I use it everyday and love the tracking and multiple user features. I recently went on a diet where it was required to weigh yourself everyday and accuracy was a must so I decided to get rid of our old analog scale and buy this one as a replacement. It looks beautiful and is accurate as well, a combination that is pretty hard to come by in a bathroom scale. When I first got it I stepped on and off several times and the weight was exactly the same each time. My husband even picked up my five pound weights to check it's accuracy and it was perfect. I programmed it for myself as user 1 and then for my husband as user 2. It worked great for about a week then one day when my husband stepped on it and it said he had gained 30 pounds! Ha! It accidently registered him as user 1 (me). I reprogrammed it again and it hasn't had another glitch like that since. I really like the color of the display (very sleek) and that it stays on quite long so you can get a good look at all your info. I also like that it's instant and you can just step on it to turn it on. Very simple to program and use. Overall, I am very happy with my choice and recommend it to anyone in the market for a good scale.

Love this Scale, Great for tracking weight
Wow, this is a great scale. I now own three different Escali scales and I bought this one partly based on my satisfaction with the other Escali's (which I love). But this one stands on its own as a really useful scale. It replaces an older tracking scale by A&D, and boy times have changed.

This scale has smart features I've never seen in any other bathroom scale. You don't have to turn it on, just step on and it starts. AND if you're within 6 pounds of your last weight, it guesses which user you are and puts you into the correct user. The only time I can see this as a problem is if you have two people using it who are very close in weight. But even then you could manually select the correct user before you step on. If you don't fit into any of the saved users, it just shows you your weight. I really like this because now others can't see either my target weight or last weight simply by weighing themselves. This was embarrassing to me before with my old tracking scale because it showed everything when someone tapped it. So many guest weigh themselves, for some reason, when they used my bathroom. I know this because they would comment on my stats on my old scale. This Escali privacy feature will help to solve that. You can review the info by pressing the SET button, but I don't think many guests would do that. If you have 4 users, just make sure your's is the last user and other's will never cycle (using the SET key) to yours. In normal use, they would never see see your info by default (it figures out which user you are by your weight).

I've never seen a display like this, but it works well. It's black, and the figures come on as lighter. They're fairly bright, not like an LED, but easy to see.

The repeatability have been perfect every time so far, always giving the same weight no matter how many times i step on and off.

I love being able to set a target weight and see how far I have to go. The scale gives you the results of how much you've changed from the last time you've weighed and the amount you have to go. It gives you all the info on the display. I just wish the display stayed on a little longer to let you get it all in. It stays on for 10 seconds, I assume to save battery life, so I've learned to look quick.

The musty smell that originates in the dirt floor is due to moisture present in the soil. I would suggest- if possible- digging out that closet floor a good foot to a foot and a half, placing septic stone up to about 3" below floor level and pour yourself a concrete floor in there. I'm not sure why it isn't a concrete floor in there but that would be my suggestion.

Its all about the furniture. The BR and closets usually don't have furnishings such as beds, couches, etc., which require a large opening, and so the doors are narrower. Had the house been builot for someone in a wheel chair, you be assured it would be ADA compliant.

By the way, many Victorian era houses had DOUBLE front doors. Why?

So caskets could be moved through the door easily. Yup.

Should I have 3 different colors in my room, closet, and bathroom?

I want my room color to be a teal or aqua color. I'm going for sorta a beach inspired look. I'm not sure on the colors for my closet and bathroom, but would it look good to have three different colors. Maybe a light pink in my bathroom and a hot pink closet. What are your thoughts, please? I like your idea! With a beach theme, the ocean in the bedroom, a soft pink "sand "in the bathroom, very good for our skin, and a sandy color tan or beige for the closet. Just make sure to mix the colors ( accessories) in the 3 spaces. Like a beach spa!

Review: Kangaroom Linen Closet Storage

One of my goals for the new year is to be more organized and daily keep my house presentable - a tall order for a busy effort-at-home mom with two little kids. But I want it bad enough to try. To that end, I have re-organized my bedroom closet with a new organizing system including shelves and more spar space. The result has been night and day for the cleanliness and also my ability to take up the cudgels for it. The bathroom closets need the same attention too.

When Cate and I were invited by Kangaroom to evaluation out some of their organizational products, I was 100 percent psyched. Their Linen Closet Storage looked really perfect for my needs.

The GOOD: Made of thick, stiff, firm cardboard wrapped in tough cotton twill, these boxes are made for using. They fold definite for easy moving or storage when you aren’t using them. The boxes have thick velcro to sustain them together and are assembled in such a way that you can pull down the front to see whatever is stored on the bottom. The pre-printed labels make out a head for for great visual appeal.

The BAD: They are only available in one color: a khaki with ivory piping. It’s a very soothing combination but surely won’t go with every decor. Also, the matter-of-fact is a little on the large size for washcloths, but it does fit clutches towels perfectly. If you choose to use it for washcloths, prepare to do a twofold row.
