What should I do with the antique buffet?
I have an antique side buffet that's been in my husband's family for years. It is in desperate need of SOMETHING! I can't decide if I should just refinish it or apply an antique white distressed finish - which do you think will look best?
It depends on what kind of wood it's made of.If it's oak I would not paint it.I would refinish it.You could hurt the value.If it's veneer than I would paint it or antique it Shabby Chic style.Good Luck

Refinishing can also be dicey, especially if the piece is made of base wood with a thin veneer on the outer surfaces. Older veneers will tend to lift from the base wood when any type of stripper or refinisher is applied. If the piece is valuable to you, I would suggest contacting a professional refinisher and getting a quote on a quality refinishing job.

How do I get the drawers open on an antique buffet?
I use my antique buffet which was passed down from my grandmother. Now all of a sudden the two drawers wont' open. The buffet is in my home with a/c in warm weather and heat in cooler weather. I have no idea how to open the drawers. The only explanation I have is maybe the wood is swollen and they're stuck shut? Please help me. Thank you.
Did you check to see if you had a piece of paper stuck or something holding the drawers shut. I had a similiar problem and once I reached my hand up the back side of the drawers I found a folded evelope lodged in the side and holding the drawer shut.
i have a mahogany antique buffet - what colors work with it for a dining table and chairs? Solid beech?
Cream color but than you would have to sand , prime 2 times, sand again and paint finish coat 2 times.
If you wish to keep it Red Mahogany since its antique you can refinish by just getting Red Mahogany ( min-wax ) it already has varnish ( poly ) in it and wet sand it with the stain going with the wood grain let set 2 or 3 day and its back to new.*

Why have the front doors on my one year old antique buffet appear faded with no shine when the rest is fine?
I bought an antique oak buffet about a year ago. At the time it was dark and shiny. WIthin the past few months I've noticed that the two front doors have lost their shine and even appear faded with a slight white coloring. I did a thumnail test and can scrape some of the build up off. It appears as though the wood below the build up is shinier and dark. I did try a tinted wax paste, which really shined up my piece, but no luck on the doors. Is this wax build up or deterioration??
Sound like the doors were finished either at a different time, or with a different color lot than the rest of the item. Or the doors were refinished, but not the rest of the buffet. Or maybe the doors are off another buffet. I would think the only way to fix it would be to refinish the whole thing, but this would ruin any resale value as an antique.
I would talk to a good custom cabinet shop about this. This is a very technical question, and someone with many years of experience is needed. Don't go to some punk kid that works for help Home Depot or the like; do go to a real cabinet shop.

mayonnaise, any brand! let sit overnight. It will dry and it looks scary like you messed it up even more, but trust me. Clean it off and TA! DA! no water spot.
