Antique Bed?
I purchased an antique headboard and footboard. There is a single hook to hold what would hold a mattress without a box spring....doe's anyone know what that piece is called and where I can find one?
I basically need the "platform" the mattress would set upon- whatever that piece is called. It should sort of be like a box spring itself, but more like a tension spring frame....it has to be able to go over the hook on the head board and footboard.
if you're talking about the hook on the end of the side rails, you can sometimes find them at a hardware store.
What sites are good to find out what style my antique bed is?
My mom recently told me that the twin bed that I have is an antique. I don't know squat about antiques so, I don't know what style I have to know how to describe it. any help. besides the library or local antiques dealers they don't do appraisals in my area. thanks
Can you post a picture of it?
You could check the back of the headboard and the inside of the side rails to see if there is anything to identify the manufacturer or craftsman's name. It may even have an item number imprinted. It would at least help you to do some research. Or take a picture and send it to a dealer to help you at least identify the style or period even if they don't do the appraisal. An antique would be 100 years old..
Good luck.
Refinishing an antique brass bed-any products I can use to stop the smudges and tarnish build-up?
The bed is an antique. We are removing old tarnish and it looks nice.
It smudges very easy and I don't want to keep re-polishing the bed.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Use Noxon to clean the tarnish off, then spray it with Clear Gloss Lacquer. Don't buy semigloss it will be cloudy.
The other answers are just silly. Ketchup? When you buy a new brass bed it comes lacquered. The lacquer prevents tarnish.
How can I keep my cat from clawing my antique bed?
I've gotten him three scratching posts and laced them with catnip. He only likes one of them, and if I move that one to my bedroom, he ignores it and goes for the bed. Every time I catch him clawing the bed I clap my hands loudly and he runs away. I think he thinks it's a game that's pretty fun, but I really need him to stop. If I lock him out of the bedroom, then he claws on the door! He's driving me bananas.
Cover the offending areas in aluminum foil. That will not harm the bed (as I have a lingering thought double-sided tape may) and your cat is not going to like it. If you don't think a small amount of stickiness will harm the bed, try double-sided tape or Sticky Paws.
Or try clipping his nails and glue-ing SoftPaws on his front claws. He will act like he's scratching, but no harm will be done. (Those need another person so you can attach them and need to be replaced every 6 weeks or so, but they do preserve the furnature).
You need to have a repellent that will not include YOU being around him - even clapping hands requires your presence, if not your touching him... aluminum foil or any of the other variants I am including here will help with or without you around.
And keep the post in the bedroom, in all cases, so he will have an acceptable alternative.
PLEASE don't think of declawing! It's cruel and painful and it's an amputation that's made SOLELY for the purpose of convenience. It's not true that if a cat scratches it will not stop - mine has left the sofa at home thoroughly alone! There are much easier alternatives!
The wood on my antique bed is dried out. Is there a product that will give it some life again?
This bed has already been stripped, & probably for a long time. Its really really dried out. I want to stain it, but am afraid its gonna soak it up like a sponge. Should i treat the wood 1st, then stain , or the other way around. I need some help. Answers greatly appreciated.
Unless the dryness is causing the wood to split don't worry as some woods dry more than others, just as some woods are oilier than others. Unless your wood is pine go ahead and stain, if the wood is pine then you will want to use a wood conditioner to treat the wood so that the stain will go on evenly. I recommend using an oil based stain followed by an oil based polyurethane. Spray the polyurethane with a hvlp sprayer, spraying light coats let dry between coats and lightly go over each coat with 0000 steel wool till you apply your last coat this don't steel wool. The oil in the stain and in the polyurethane will be all you need as it will soak in and seal the wood.
